Villa Nuti

Built in 1726 in perfect early 18th century style, the villa was originally the country residence of the Nuti al Vescovato family, a patrician family well known in Gubbio for having contributed to the architectural development of the town and for having been the birthplace of many influential prelates during the rule of the Papal States. The words al Vescovato added to the surname served to distinguish the family from the Nuti alle Loggette, another well-known Gubbio family, with whom, however, there was no blood relationship. The family had its town residence in Via dei Cavalieri, today Via XX Settembre (where the Bosone Palace hotel is located, ed.). For the country villa, the two Nuti brothers, Francesco Maria, canon of Gubbio cathedral, and Guidubaldo decided to take advantage of their property on the outskirts of Gubbio at Col di Molino, a gentle slope that still offers some of the most beautiful views of the city and surrounding area and where other important Gubbio families had already built their residences during the same period. The small church on the property is dedicated to St Michael Archangel and was blessed on 21 November 1754 on the feast of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Temple. The dedication to St Michael the Archangel was part of a precise plan according to which all neighbouring churches, located at strategic points for the military control of the territory, were to be dedicated to the saint historically venerated by the Byzantines and Lombards. In fact, the churches of Giomisci, Chiaserna, Sant'Angelo di Col di Peccio and Sant'Angelo d'Assino were dedicated to St Michael Archangel. The church of Col di Molino was added precisely because of its privileged location on the high ground that dominates the entire valley of Gubbio.Inside the church, on the only altar adorned with delightful decorative stuccoes, the Archangel Michael is depicted within a graceful frame in the iconography most widespread after the Counter-Reformation, as he engages in battle and defeats the devil. On 29 September each year, the church has for centuries been the setting for the celebration of the feast of St Michael the Archangel.
